Electrical Engineer

1. What is your current position in OSSO?

For the past nine years I have worked as an Electrical Engineer at OSSO. I am primarily responsible for the electrical integrity of all our assets as well as overseeing the design and development of new products and technology for either ourselves or our clients.

2. Explain your career growth and journey to date.

I started my career in Wick completing a five-year apprenticeship scheme at Thurso Tech college studying electric and electronic engineering. I moved to Aberdeen and worked for an electrical company overseeing electrical controls and automation implementation for clients all over the world. I did this for 13 years before moving to OSSO to take the position as Electrical Engineer. Throughout my career I have been fortunate to work with some incredible people developing some great pieces of technology.

3. What do you enjoy about your role and working for OSSO?

There are a number of things I enjoy, but primarily it’s the people. Many of us have worked together for a lot of years, we all trust each other and have confidence in knowing that if you need help someone will always step up. Added to this is the depth of knowledge within our team. It’s the kind of knowledge you can only get with years of experience and it creates an incredible environment to develop technology, bounce ideas off one another and problem solve. My career spans over three decades and I am still learning new theories which is just fantastic.

Lastly, I would have to say the variety of my work. No two days are the same - from running with the PHE team, developing systems either in-house or for clients to building electrical control panels and developing solutions to problems, I can honestly say I enjoy coming to work.

4. What technology/product/cultural piece are you particularly proud of at OSSO?

I am particularly proud of our WTS20. This is an advanced piece of equipment, a first of its kind in the construction industry due to its automated dosing system. To have been involved in the development from concept stage through to commissioning and then seeing it successfully deployed is a great feeling of achievement.

5. What advice would you give to those just starting out in their careers?

Never underestimate the importance of on-the-job training. Every day’s a school day and to learn with real life experiences is essential when crafting your own career path. Work hard, be adaptable, know that there will always be change, embrace it with both hands and always be willing to try new things.
